There’s only so much that you need to prepare for a baby. A parent might spend so much time on deciding the type of stroller and crib to buy, that the bedding becomes a somewhat irrelevant figure in her choices for baby furniture. There have actually been cases where improper bedding sets have caused accidental suffocation and even death. A baby spends most of his time, asleep on his bed to sleep, play and interact. This is why it comes as no surprise that buying the right type of baby bedding is important to you’re your baby safe, secure, and happy.

There’s really a lot of ground to cover when buying baby bedding. Are baby bumpers, comforters and mini pillows necessary? Is the bed safe enough for the baby to sleep on every night? Can anything be done about my baby’s allergies to various fabrics and cleansers? Will the color of the bedding match the theme of my room? These are basic and well thought out questions that will go through a parent’s mind while looking for a bedding to use on a daily basis.

Baby bedding can usually come with a lot of accessories. These accessories are very cute to look at and make the crib feel “complete”, but not all of them are necessary. Babies are not like miniature adults with needs similar to adults. Parents often forget that babies are born with immature organ functions and during their first few months in life, these organs are still maturing and developing.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has recently released a study that baby bedding should only comprise of a well fitting sheet and a firm mattress to hold the sheet in place. Their recommendation is based on a study that baby bedding can pose as a significant threat to the well being of babies. Their study shows that when a baby sleeps with accessories like crib bumpers, thick comforters and mini pillows, the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or SIDS increases. SIDS is the worst nightmare that parents can face as an apparently healthy baby sleeps soundly one moment and suddenly dies without an apparent cause.

Many professionals agree that not buying unique baby bedding accessories like crib bumpers and heavy comforters can actually save the life of your baby.  The reason why these extra bits of accessories are no longer advised is because they can potentially cause suffocation for baby while he lies face down. Babies have immature lung function and snuggling on a baby bedding accessory can pose as a choking hazard as it tends to weigh down on his lungs. For cold nights, onesie pajama is a better alternative to a blanket.

Crib bumpers and comforters are still marketed today so be wary of sets that carry these items as you are not likely able to use them. A crib bumper is used to provide added safety for the baby in case he knocks his head on the side rails. If you want to buy a crib bumper, look for one that can be tied securely to the side rails to prevent limb entrapment.

The ideal bed sheet is one that is made to fit securely on the baby bed. The sheet should go around the way to the back of the bed and not just fit flimsily at the corner. Some sheets are designed to fit the mattress like a pillowcase so your baby is secure no matter how much he tosses and turns at night.

Baby beddings usually come in sets to provide parents with a variety of choices to mix and match. These beddings allow parents a coordinated look and feel to their nursery. There are themed bedding sets that allow parents to change their nursery’s look from plain and simple to elegant and dreamy. Bedding sets also come in various sizes to match the type of crib or bassinet available.

Baby bedding for girls are quite versatile as there are many designs to choose from. Big fluffy bows and ruffles are usually the common choices for the design. Parents often opt for princess themes to add sophistication to the room. Cartoon characters on beddings are also a popular choice that can add a sense of whimsical adventure in the room. The common colors used for baby bedding for girls is usually pink, yellow, peach and red. If you have a round canopy crib, it goes without saying that the color of the canopy should match the color of the baby crib bedding. Some canopy cribs allow for curtains to fall from the canopy. If this is the case, make sure that these decorative curtains are far from the reach of your curious little angel as curtains can pose as a choking hazard for young infants.

Baby bedding for boys is more simple and functional than for bedding girls. The most widely accepted color for boys is blue, but parents can also utilize green and brown to provide diversity. To build on a boy’s adventurous spirit, their themed beddings are usually related to jungles, relics, dinosaurs and spacemen themes. Some bedding can actually glow in the dark to provide baby with a unique style.
